When Does Insurance Cover LASIK?

LASIK

The cost of LASIK is one of the first things people ask about, and the question of whether insurance will cover it usually follows right behind.

After years of paying for glasses, contact lenses, and annual eye exams, it feels reasonable to assume that health or vision insurance would pitch in for a procedure that corrects your vision for good. The reality is a little more complicated.

Keep reading to learn why insurance typically excludes LASIK, how tax-advantaged savings accounts can help, what the procedure actually costs in the Fort Worth area, and how Mueller Vision makes payment manageable!

Why Most Health Insurance Plans Don’t Cover LASIK

Health insurance is built around one basic question: is this procedure medically necessary?

For most people considering LASIK eye surgery, the answer from an insurer’s perspective is no. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are all refractive errors, meaning the eye does not focus light quite right. They can all be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, so insurers classify LASIK as an elective procedure.

That label, elective, does not mean LASIK is frivolous or unnecessary for the people who want it. It simply means there is an alternative solution available, and insurance draws the line there. The same logic applies to a lot of cosmetic and lifestyle-improving procedures that genuinely improve quality of life but do not meet the bar for medical necessity.

Some employer-sponsored vision plans, such as VSP or EyeMed, do offer a partial discount on LASIK through affiliated providers. This is not the same as coverage. Typically, it means 10 to 15 percent off the listed price, or a flat discount of a few hundred dollars.

It is worth calling your vision plan to ask whether any refractive benefit applies, but going in with realistic expectations will save you from disappointment. If LASIK is not listed as a covered benefit in your plan documents, it is almost certainly not covered.

Using Your FSA or HSA to Pay for LASIK

Here is where many patients find real savings: flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA). Both allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for qualified medical expenses, and LASIK qualifies under IRS guidelines. That means you are effectively paying for part of the procedure with money you never paid income tax on, which translates to a meaningful discount depending on your tax bracket.

An HSA is tied to a high-deductible health plan. The money rolls over year to year, so there is no pressure to spend it by a certain date. If you have been contributing to an HSA for a while, you may have a sizeable balance ready to put toward LASIK.

An FSA works a little differently. It is funded through payroll deductions and, for most plans, the full annual election amount is available from day one of the plan year. The tradeoff is the use-it-or-lose-it rule: most FSA plans require you to spend the balance by December 31 or lose what is left.

At Mueller Vision, both FSA and HSA funds are accepted as payment.

What LASIK Actually Costs in Fort Worth

Knowing what to expect in terms of price helps you plan accurately.

At Mueller Vision, LASIK pricing ranges from $4,500 – $5,500 for both eyes.

Pricing across Fort Worth varies by practice, and it’s important to be wary of pricing that seems too good to be true. Those lower figures may reflect things like outdated technology, limited follow-up care, or a per-eye price that climbs once you factor in add-ons at checkout. When comparing quotes, look closely at what is actually included, because the full cost of a well-performed procedure with experienced hands and modern equipment tells a very different story than the headline number.

LASIK is a precision procedure performed on your eyes, and the skill of the surgeon and the quality of the technology matter significantly to your outcome. At Mueller Vision, Dr. Brett Mueller is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who has performed thousands of refractive surgeries. His depth of experience, combined with advanced laser technology, means you are in capable hands from consultation through recovery.

Financing and Payment Options at Mueller Vision

Paying the full cost upfront is not required. Mueller Vision offers financing options that spread the cost into monthly payments, making LASIK accessible without waiting years to save up the full amount.

Many patients use CareCredit, a healthcare financing program that offers promotional periods with low or no interest. Approval is quick, and you can apply before or at your consultation appointment.

When you factor in monthly payments against what you are currently spending on contacts and glasses, many patients find the numbers come out close to even, sometimes in favor of LASIK, within just a few years. The difference is that LASIK payments eventually end. The cost of glasses and contacts does not.

Ready to See What LASIK Would Cost You?

Insurance coverage for LASIK is rarely available, but between FSA and HSA funds, vision plan discounts where they apply, and flexible financing, most patients find the cost far more workable than they expected going in. The key is knowing which tools are available before you write it off as out of reach.

If you are ready to get clear numbers for your specific situation, schedule a consultation at Mueller Vision in Fort Worth, TX. The team will walk you through candidacy, pricing, and payment options so you can make a decision that works for your eyes and your budget.

Just had my cataract removed from my right eye by Dr. Mueller. Even though there was some nervousness on my part the surgery went well and was quite painless. Dr. Mueller and his staff are very attentive and explained everything to me beforehand and as he went during the procedure. My surgery is only a few days old but I can already tell a huge difference in my eyesight. I've never had a surgeon take the time to call me himself after a procedure to see how I was doing, but Dr. Mueller did exactly that, that evening. In my book you can't go wrong trusting your precious eyesight to Dr. Mueller! I'll be having my left eye done in a few days and am looking forward to seeing everything more clearly. My thanks to him and his staff as well as to the staff at the surgical facility where the procedure was done.

What a great visual experience from start to finish. That's no pun intended bc the office environment is visually appealing and relaxing as well. I just loved Dr.Crowell's energy. But only is she bubbly and energetic, but super knowledgeable as well. She patiently and honestly answered my questions as I went in with a specific concern. Instead of trying to drag me into surgery for the money, she was like "no big deal right now so let's just keep an eye on it."

Can here after discovering the EVO ICL option corrective eye surgery as an alternative to LASIK. Dr. Mueller and staff were nothing short of exceptional. They are very thorough with the pre op, surgery, and the extensive follow ups. My vision has dramatically improved and I’m already seeing 20/15 after 2 days of the procedure. For anyone considering this route, please try Mueller Vision. Dr. Mueller was one of the investigators giving trial to the FDA for getting EVO ICL approved!

My experience with Mueller Vision has been amazing! I had been battling recurrent corneal erosion after an eye injury for a tad over two years. Initially, I would have an episode every few months or so and I was kinda, sorta okay with that. Unfortunately the frequency of the erosions began increasing and that is when I decided to visit Meuller Vision. They performed a procedure (don't know the exact name of the procedure) to remove the damaged layer of my cornea. I am now three months post-op and so far, so good. Thank you to Alondra, Amy, Dr. Crowell and Dr. Meuller. You guys are great but I hope to never have to see you again.
