Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery in Fort Worth

Best Cataract Surgeons in America

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a natural part of the aging process. Having one is something that almost everyone will experience.

They occur because the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. This happens due to proteins in the eye breaking down and clumping together. When you have a cataract, the once-clear natural lens will become cloudy, impacting your ability to see clearly.

Although cataracts can occur at any age, they are most common and likely to start developing in your forties or fifties. However, you might not even realize you have cataracts at first. Though this sounds crazy, since cataracts impair your vision, early-stage cataracts have few discernible symptoms.

Cataracts can take years or even decades to develop fully, making it possible to be unaware you have them at first!

How Do I Know if I Have Cataracts?

Although the most recognizable symptom of cataracts is blurry vision, it’s not the only one.

Others you may experience include:

  • Heightened light sensitivity
  • Finding it more challenging to drive at night due to glare around streetlights or from oncoming traffic
  • Needing more frequent changes to your prescription for glasses and contact lenses
  • Noticing colors seem muddy, yellowed or faded
  • Experiencing double vision in only one eye

If you have cataracts, you may only experience some of these symptoms. See your ophthalmologist at Mueller Vision in Fort Worth to determine if it’s cataracts or another eye condition.

Closeup of an IOL

What is an IOL?

During laser cataract surgery, you’ll have your natural lens, which is cloudy and impairing your vision, replaced with an artificial lens, known as an IOL. Since their inception, IOLs have come a long way to help you see and interact with your world.

There are more options for IOLs than ever. The expert team at Mueller Vision offers the latest and most state-of-the-art IOLs to ensure our patients can experience their best possible vision following laser cataract surgery. What’s not to love about achieving the best vision of your life, thanks to laser cataract surgery?

Types of IOLs

Single-Focus Lenses

A monofocal lens is also known as a single-distance lens since it can only correct your vision at one distance. These are the most basic IOLs available.

Insurance and Medicare will usually cover these lenses when you have laser cataract surgery. This makes them a good choice for patients who are budget-conscious and don’t mind using visual aids after laser cataract surgery.

You’ll likely need some kind of visual aid with a single-focus IOL, whether you need reading glasses, progressives, bifocals, or contact lenses if you want to see clearly at all distances.

Accommodating IOLs

An accommodating IOL is designed to switch between up close and distance focus by moving inside your eye. Accommodating IOLs do this in a way that is most similar to how the eye naturally moves.

Unlike a monofocal IOL, which can only focus at one distance, accommodating IOLs flex and bend, allowing them to zoom in and out just like your natural lens could before cataracts. These flexible optics physically adjust to your eye’s focusing muscles, ensuring you have the magnification you need at all times.

That means if you’re sewing a button on your grandkid’s Halloween costume or enjoying your favorite show, your vision will be able to keep up with you. Accommodating IOLs shapeshift within your eye, reducing how much you need to depend on reading glasses after laser cataract surgery.

Multifocal and Trifocal IOLs

Multifocal lenses are premium IOLs that can correct multiple ranges of vision. You’ll be able to see clearly up close, at a distance, and everything in between.

Most multifocal IOLs are bifocals that have two focus areas. Because of this, it makes intermediate-range tasks like cooking or working on the computer easier, but you might find that you still have to pull out your reading glasses to sharpen your vision for these tasks.

Trifocal IOLs are the latest and greatest lenses available to cataract patients. These state-of-the-art IOLs help reduce your dependence on visual aids.

Trifocal IOLs work because they divide the lens into three separate focus points: up close, intermediate, and distance vision. Because there are three distinct focal points, trifocal lenses cover all your bases.

If you want to finally achieve visual freedom and see better than ever, trifocal IOLs are a must to consider. These IOLs are getting rave reviews from patients who have them because they provide seamless vision at any range.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs

Extended depth of focus lenses (EDOF) help transition your focus from an arm’s length to a distance. These IOLs are a great choice if you want to be able to see well, with sharp, pristine vision at a distance, while doing things like working on the computer, scanning the shelves at the grocery store for that new recipe you must try, or working out so you can see your surroundings while focusing on your equipment or phone if needed.

Multi-tasking has never been so easy before! If you like to drive at night, an EDOF IOL will ensure you have crisp vision from your high beams to the edge of the road. Extended depth of focus lenses provide a nice gradual slope of focus rather than suddenly shifting between distances.

EDOF IOLs distribute your focus evenly across a continuous range without seeming jerky or unnatural. These IOLs can also reduce your dependence on visual aids to help you achieve a better quality of life after laser cataract surgery.

Light Adjusting Lenses (LAL)

The Light Adjustable Lens from RxSight (LAL) is the first and only IOL of its kind that offers patients the ability to adjust their vision after laser cataract surgery, providing a precise and customized prescription. With the Light Adjustable Lens, you’ll come in for several UV light treatments, which are short and painless.

Patients must wear special UV protection glasses to ensure their Light Adjustable Lens isn’t unnecessarily adjusted. After a final light treatment, your vision will be locked into place, providing you with the custom vision you want for years to come. Many patients with the Light Adjustable Lens can also eliminate their dependency on visual aids after laser cataract surgery.

Just had my cataract removed from my right eye by Dr. Mueller. Even though there was some nervousness on my part the surgery went well and was quite painless. Dr. Mueller and his staff are very attentive and explained everything to me beforehand and as he went during the procedure. My surgery is only a few days old but I can already tell a huge difference in my eyesight. I've never had a surgeon take the time to call me himself after a procedure to see how I was doing, but Dr. Mueller did exactly that, that evening. In my book you can't go wrong trusting your precious eyesight to Dr. Mueller! I'll be having my left eye done in a few days and am looking forward to seeing everything more clearly. My thanks to him and his staff as well as to the staff at the surgical facility where the procedure was done.

What a great visual experience from start to finish. That's no pun intended bc the office environment is visually appealing and relaxing as well. I just loved Dr.Crowell's energy. But only is she bubbly and energetic, but super knowledgeable as well. She patiently and honestly answered my questions as I went in with a specific concern. Instead of trying to drag me into surgery for the money, she was like "no big deal right now so let's just keep an eye on it."

Can here after discovering the EVO ICL option corrective eye surgery as an alternative to LASIK. Dr. Mueller and staff were nothing short of exceptional. They are very thorough with the pre op, surgery, and the extensive follow ups. My vision has dramatically improved and I’m already seeing 20/15 after 2 days of the procedure. For anyone considering this route, please try Mueller Vision. Dr. Mueller was one of the investigators giving trial to the FDA for getting EVO ICL approved!

My experience with Mueller Vision has been amazing! I had been battling recurrent corneal erosion after an eye injury for a tad over two years. Initially, I would have an episode every few months or so and I was kinda, sorta okay with that. Unfortunately the frequency of the erosions began increasing and that is when I decided to visit Meuller Vision. They performed a procedure (don't know the exact name of the procedure) to remove the damaged layer of my cornea. I am now three months post-op and so far, so good. Thank you to Alondra, Amy, Dr. Crowell and Dr. Meuller. You guys are great but I hope to never have to see you again.
