Recovery From LASIK: A Complete Timeline

LASIK

LASIK is known for its quick recovery, but that doesn’t mean healing happens overnight.

While many people experience clearer vision within 24 hours, your eyes continue healing long after you leave the surgery center. Every stage of recovery brings new changes, and most are a normal part of the healing process. Here’s what you can expect from the first few hours after surgery through the months ahead.

How Long Does it Take to Recover From LASIK?

While functional recovery is fast, full recovery is often gradual. Most patients see well enough to return to work and normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours, which is why LASIK has a reputation for minimal downtime. Complete corneal healing, on the other hand, takes about three to six months, even though you will not be waiting on your vision for anything close to that long. The bulk of the visual improvement happens in the first day or two, and the months that follow are mostly about fine stabilization and the last traces of dryness or night glare fading away. Where you land within these ranges depends on your prescription, your eyes’ natural healing response, and how closely you follow your post-operative instructions.

The First Few Hours after LASIK

The procedure itself is quick, often under 10 minutes per eye, and painless thanks to numbing drops. The recovery clock starts the moment you sit up.

For the first several hours, your vision may look watery or hazy, a bit like opening your eyes underwater. Many patients also feel mild burning, itching, or the sensation that something is in the eye. This is normal and usually fades within four to six hours.

The most important thing you can do during this window is rest with your eyes closed for as long as you can. Sleep is ideal, since keeping your eyes shut lets the corneal surface settle without the strain of light, screens, or focusing.

You will leave the office with protective shields or sunglasses and a schedule of prescription drops to begin that day. Resist the urge to test your new vision by staring at your phone or the TV. The eyes reward rest more than they reward curiosity in these first hours.

The First 24 to 48 Hours

You will see your eye doctor for a follow-up the day after surgery. The team checks that the corneal flap is sitting properly and measures your vision, and a large share of patients are already reading the 20/20 line at this appointment. That fast visual turnaround is one of the defining features of LASIK. By the 24 to 48 hour mark, most people return to work and light daily activities, using their antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops on the schedule their surgeon set.

The First Week

The first week is about protecting the healing surface while you ease back into your routine. The cornea is sealing but still delicate, so a few rules matter more than any others during this stretch:

Dryness can be common during this timeframe. Your eyes may feel gritty or tired, especially in front of a screen. Keep artificial tears within reach and use them often. If the dryness lingers longer than you expected, your doctor can tailor a plan, and ongoing dry eye management is straightforward to address once your eyes have started to settle.

Screens are allowed this week, but your eyes fatigue faster than usual. Take frequent breaks, blink deliberately, and stop when things feel strained rather than pushing through.

Weeks Two Through Four

By the second week, daily life feels close to normal, and you can add activities back in stages.

Light exercise at home is usually fine within a couple of days of surgery, but wait about two weeks before returning to swimming or any water sport. Contact sports and racquet sports call for protective eyewear for roughly a month, since a stray elbow or ball can disturb a cornea that is still healing.

Three to Six Months: Full Healing

You will function normally long before this point, but the cornea takes three to six months to complete its healing and for vision to fully stabilize. This is when any lingering dryness typically resolves. Your surgeon may schedule check-ups at one week, one month, and again a few months out to confirm everything is tracking as expected.

Flap-based LASIK heals quickly on the surface because the protective layer is repositioned rather than removed. Surface procedures like PRK take longer in the early weeks because the outer layer must regrow, though the final vision quality is comparable. Flapless options such as SMILE LASIK carry their own recovery profile as well.

The right procedure depends on your corneas, prescription, and lifestyle, which is exactly what a thorough evaluation sorts out before you ever schedule surgery.

Just had my cataract removed from my right eye by Dr. Mueller. Even though there was some nervousness on my part the surgery went well and was quite painless. Dr. Mueller and his staff are very attentive and explained everything to me beforehand and as he went during the procedure. My surgery is only a few days old but I can already tell a huge difference in my eyesight. I've never had a surgeon take the time to call me himself after a procedure to see how I was doing, but Dr. Mueller did exactly that, that evening. In my book you can't go wrong trusting your precious eyesight to Dr. Mueller! I'll be having my left eye done in a few days and am looking forward to seeing everything more clearly. My thanks to him and his staff as well as to the staff at the surgical facility where the procedure was done.

What a great visual experience from start to finish. That's no pun intended bc the office environment is visually appealing and relaxing as well. I just loved Dr.Crowell's energy. But only is she bubbly and energetic, but super knowledgeable as well. She patiently and honestly answered my questions as I went in with a specific concern. Instead of trying to drag me into surgery for the money, she was like "no big deal right now so let's just keep an eye on it."

Can here after discovering the EVO ICL option corrective eye surgery as an alternative to LASIK. Dr. Mueller and staff were nothing short of exceptional. They are very thorough with the pre op, surgery, and the extensive follow ups. My vision has dramatically improved and I’m already seeing 20/15 after 2 days of the procedure. For anyone considering this route, please try Mueller Vision. Dr. Mueller was one of the investigators giving trial to the FDA for getting EVO ICL approved!

My experience with Mueller Vision has been amazing! I had been battling recurrent corneal erosion after an eye injury for a tad over two years. Initially, I would have an episode every few months or so and I was kinda, sorta okay with that. Unfortunately the frequency of the erosions began increasing and that is when I decided to visit Meuller Vision. They performed a procedure (don't know the exact name of the procedure) to remove the damaged layer of my cornea. I am now three months post-op and so far, so good. Thank you to Alondra, Amy, Dr. Crowell and Dr. Meuller. You guys are great but I hope to never have to see you again.
