How Do You Know If You Need Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts,Featured

If you have cataracts or suspect you may have them, you may be wondering when you should have them treated. The only way to permanently treat cataracts is through cataract surgery.

You may not immediately need surgery when you’re diagnosed with cataracts. However, once your cataracts make it harder and harder to see, cataract surgery can give you your life back by removing them entirely!

How do you know when it’s time, though? Keep reading to learn more about how to know if you need cataract surgery.

When Do Cataract Surgeons Recommend Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a procedure that permanently removes your cataracts by taking out the natural lens of your eye that has been affected. Your natural lens is then replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) that cannot develop cataracts.

The procedure can restore all vision lost to cataracts and even has the potential to bring you better vision than before, depending on the IOL you choose. Although, some people with cataracts never have any visual problems.

Cataracts tend to form very slowly, often taking years and years to develop. When they first start to form, they likely won’t be noticeable at all.

They may even take so long to cause symptoms that you never need surgery, depending on how old you are when they develop. Therefore, surgeons recommend you have cataract surgery when your cataracts begin to affect your quality of life.

If you feel cataracts have started impairing your ability to do daily tasks like reading and driving, it may be time for cataract surgery. Still, it can be hard to recognize visual problems from cataracts, so you should familiarize yourself with the symptoms.

What are the Symptoms of Cataracts?

Cataracts often form very slowly. You can have them for years and never notice any symptoms.

When symptoms do develop, they can be hard to recognize. Having regular eye exams helps your eye doctor monitor cataract development so you can better understand how they may affect your vision.

Cataract symptoms include:

If any of these symptoms make it difficult to do your daily tasks, you should consider having cataract surgery.

Don’t Wait Too Long

While eye doctors don’t always recommend having cataract surgery as soon as your cataracts are diagnosed, many patients still wait longer than necessary to undergo the procedure. It can be hard to admit when you’re struggling with your vision.

Being honest with yourself and recognizing when you’re having trouble seeing well is important. Advanced cataracts can lead to accidents and injury.

You don’t want your cataracts to get to the point where they make you feel unsafe. If you think you are struggling with your vision because of cataracts, you should talk to your eye doctor about having cataract surgery.

Replacing your natural lens with an IOL removes your cataracts and can even provide you with better vision than you had before if you choose a premium option. You might never need reading glasses or contacts again!

Just had my cataract removed from my right eye by Dr. Mueller. Even though there was some nervousness on my part the surgery went well and was quite painless. Dr. Mueller and his staff are very attentive and explained everything to me beforehand and as he went during the procedure. My surgery is only a few days old but I can already tell a huge difference in my eyesight. I've never had a surgeon take the time to call me himself after a procedure to see how I was doing, but Dr. Mueller did exactly that, that evening. In my book you can't go wrong trusting your precious eyesight to Dr. Mueller! I'll be having my left eye done in a few days and am looking forward to seeing everything more clearly. My thanks to him and his staff as well as to the staff at the surgical facility where the procedure was done.

What a great visual experience from start to finish. That's no pun intended bc the office environment is visually appealing and relaxing as well. I just loved Dr.Crowell's energy. But only is she bubbly and energetic, but super knowledgeable as well. She patiently and honestly answered my questions as I went in with a specific concern. Instead of trying to drag me into surgery for the money, she was like "no big deal right now so let's just keep an eye on it."

Can here after discovering the EVO ICL option corrective eye surgery as an alternative to LASIK. Dr. Mueller and staff were nothing short of exceptional. They are very thorough with the pre op, surgery, and the extensive follow ups. My vision has dramatically improved and I’m already seeing 20/15 after 2 days of the procedure. For anyone considering this route, please try Mueller Vision. Dr. Mueller was one of the investigators giving trial to the FDA for getting EVO ICL approved!

My experience with Mueller Vision has been amazing! I had been battling recurrent corneal erosion after an eye injury for a tad over two years. Initially, I would have an episode every few months or so and I was kinda, sorta okay with that. Unfortunately the frequency of the erosions began increasing and that is when I decided to visit Meuller Vision. They performed a procedure (don't know the exact name of the procedure) to remove the damaged layer of my cornea. I am now three months post-op and so far, so good. Thank you to Alondra, Amy, Dr. Crowell and Dr. Meuller. You guys are great but I hope to never have to see you again.
